    Description

    [Mexican War]. Major Jubal Early Document Signed "J. A. Early / Major Va. Volunteers." Two and one-half pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10.5", Monterey, Mexico, May 18, 1847. The document consists of fourteen "regulations [which] are established for the government of Monterey in addition to those heretofore enforced, and are published for the information of all concerned." The first five regulations limit non-Mexican citizens from entering Monterey. For example, regulation number five orders that "Teamsters in the employment of the Quarter Master" must "confine themselves to their wagon-yards." The sixth regulation requires special permission for anyone selling "intoxicating liquors." The remaining regulations places strict limitations on drunkenness, gambling, the "carrying of Bowie knives, Pistols & the like," "interference with the property of Mexicans," and "disorders of any kind." All ink, including Early's signature, is dark and bold.
