    Description

[Mexican War] and [Texas Rangers]. John E. Wool Letter Signed "John E. Wool / Brig Genl / Commdg." One page of a bifolium, 8" x 10", "Head Quarters San Antonio Texas," September 28, 1846, to Lieutenant Patrick regarding supplying three Texas Ranger ("Mounted Texians") companies in Federal service. Very clean with no address panel. Wool, who served in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War, signs this order reading in part:

"The Quarter Master and Commissary of Subsistence at this place, as charged, with supplying Captain [John H.] Conners Company of Mounted Texians at Castroville and Captain [John J.] Grumble's Company of Mounted Texians, supposed to be mustered recently into the service, at Austin. If Captain S. C. Ross [likely Shapley P. Ross] to be stationed at or near Williams Creek 45 miles from Austin should report a Company of Mounted Men as the laws requires for the service, within twenty days, Captain Howe will be ordered to muster it into the service; and it will be supplied as the other Frontier Companies by the Quarter Master and Commissary of Subsistence at this place."

Only days earlier, Captain John Grumbles raised a company of Texas Rangers for Federal service and was elected captain. John H. Conner and Shapley P. Ross also raised companies. All three, serving in Major Thomas Smith's battalion, served in northern Mexico and western Texas until the end of the Mexican War.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
