    [Mexican War] and [Postal History]. Twelve Mexican War-Era Covers. One is addressed to Captain Daniel Ruggles, who later became a Confederate brigadier general: "Captain D. Ruggles / 5th Infantry / General Scott's Army Mexico." (Includes a clipping from a contemporary newspaper reporting on Capt. Ruggles and his recruits.) Two are addressed to Lt. George Deas of the 5th Infantry at Point Isabel, Texas. One is addressed to Dr. Wakeman Bryarley, an assistant surgeon "Care of Col Geo. W Hughes / Civ & Mil Governor. / Jalapa Mexico." Others are addressed to Thomas Butler King of Georgia; R. M. Young of the General Land Office at Washington; Mrs. C. M. Hitchcock of Georgia; Lieut. Samuel Lockwood, "Commanding United States Steamer Scourge" at Veracruz; Mrs. William F. Raynolds of Ohio; Brigadier General George Cadwalader at Mexico City; John Stewart of Kentucky; and Mrs. L. S. Taliaferro of Virginia. All have postmarked stamps (Veracruz, Washington, D.C.; New Orleans; Brazos; Pt. Isabel; and more). All bear expected soiling. Eight are affixed to a backing.

    An act dated March 3, 1847, allowed that "All letters, newspapers, or other packets, not exceeding 1 ounce in weight, directed to any officer, musician, or private of the Army of the United States in Mexico . . . shall be conveyed in the mail free of postage during the present war."
