    Description

[Mexican War] and [Occupation of Monterey]. Bilingual Broadside Issued by Colonel I. H. Wright. One page, 8.25" x 12.5", Monterey [Mexico], July 20, 1847, headed, "Orden Num. 165." (The left column is in Spanish and the right in English.) This broadside notifies the citizens of Monterey that the city's tariffs were being replaced with an income tax. Col. I.H. Wright, who authorized the broadside, was the "Commanding Post & Governor." Assistant Adjutant General B. K. Andrews' name also appears in print. Lightly toned and very clean. Uneven upper edge. Reading in part:

"The tariff of taxes imposed by the municipality of this City . . . and approved by A. M. Mitchell Col Commanding at this Post and Governor is hereby abrogated, and in lieu thereof the said municipality is hereby authorized and empowered to levy a tax of one per centum per annum upon the income of all persons resident in Monterey, whether citizens or Foreigners, who are not in the civil or military employment of the United States Government." Other details of the tax change are included in the broadside.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
