[Mexican War]. American Occupation Archive dated between November 1846 and March 1848 and consisting of twenty-two items. Nine of the items are letters (six in English; three in Spanish) from Monterey, Mexico, or "Camp Buena Vista" regarding matters of importance to the American occupying army (one is signed by John E. Wool). One letter directs the alcalde to "remove from the city forthwith a woman named Guadaloupe Garcia who has been for some time past engaged in selling liquors to soldiers." Another letter is written "To the President of the U.S. or Secretary of War" from a soldier held under arrest by the Provost Guard. In this letter, the soldier - a German - explains that he had been taken prisoner by the Mexican Army but had escaped and was now being held by the U.S. Army for reasons unknown to him. Endorsements reveal that the German was released and assigned to an infantry company.

Seven of the items are military communications, including handwritten proclamations, orders, and receipts related to alcaldes. One communication orders the arrest of a "vile and disreputable" woman for her attempt to kill "a boy with a knife . . . she being at the time drunk." The following are also included: two printed circulars (in Spanish); one hand-written proclamation prohibiting "All persons . . . from selling . . . within the city of Monterrey . . . any intoxicating liquor"; one printed speech ("Of Mr. Solomon Foot, of Vermont, on the Origin and Causes of the Mexican War," Washington, 1846); and two maps: one of Texas (5.75" x 9.75") "as she originally was; as she claimed to be; and as she actually was the date of her annexation" and one of central Mexico (9.5" x 8.25") "Showing the Contemplated Route of the Army." All items exhibit usual toning and minor soiling and staining.
