[Maryland Secessionist John Hanson Thomas]. Edwin V. Sumner: Group of Four Autograph Letters , two with signatures removed. Union Gen. Edwin Vose Sumner penned these four letters, each of which is one page and measures 5" x 8", to Annie Gordon Thomas, wife of Dr. John H. Thomas, a member of the Maryland legislature and an advocate for the state's secession. In the first, dated January 5, 1863, Sumner, who was at Falmouth, Virginia, writes that he has received a letter from a family member of Thomas' "requesting permission to send a trunk of clothing, &c, to a family at Fredericksburg. I have spoken to General Burnside . . . and he has no objection." Eleven days later, he wrote again regarding the trunk, stating: "I think it will be better to postpone sending the trunk, till you find some person who will bring it down." The signature of this letter has been removed.

One week later, on January 22, he wrote again from Falmouth, this time transmitting letters "from Mr Dexter of Boston" and asking "if the person alluded to, is your friend Mr McIntosh." The final letter dates from February 13. Gen. Sumner was in Washington, having requested his relief of command before being reassigned to a command in Missouri. Here he writes that he "shall be happy to pay my respects to you tomorrow evening, if you will be at home, and it would be agreeable to you." The signature of this letter has also been removed. With one original transmittal envelope. Sumner died one month later, March 21, of a heart attack while visiting his daughter in New York. Letters are in very good or better condition.
