[Indian Wars]. William P. Clark Autograph Letter Signed "W. P. Clark." One page, 7.75' x 6.5", n. p., April 23, 1877, to Lieutenant J. A. Johnson regarding supplies for an Indian dance. He writes, in full: "Gen. [Ranald S.] Mackenzie says you can send over by Bearer (6) Six Boxes of hard bread, (30) Thirty pounds coffee, (50) Fifty pounds sugar, (30) Thirty pounds bacon. These rations are to be given to Indians who come to dance the P.M. and Gen. M. will give you an order to cover same." Moderate toning along the top edge. Staining at upper left. Weakened folds are separating at edges with no loss of paper.

An 1868 graduate of West Point, William Philo Clark (1845-1884) served as General George Crook's Chief of Scouts and wrote the first book on Indian sign languages, published posthumously in 1885. One week after the requisition, Clark, known to the Indians as "White Hat," commenced negotiations for the surrender of Crazy Horse. At the conclusion, Crazy Horse presented Clark with a war bonnet, war shirt, a pipe, and other gifts.
