[Gettysburg Casualty]. Union General Samuel K. Zook Autograph Endorsement Signed "S.K. Zook." Found on the integral blank of a two page letter, 8" x 9.75". On March 14, 1863, then-colonel Zook (1821-1863) placed his endorsement to a letter to the governor of New York recommending the promotion of Capt. James W. Britt to lieutenant colonel of the regiment. The letter is signed by seventeen officers of the regiment. Zook, writing from the "Hd. qrs. 3rd. Brigade / Hancock's Division," writes that Capt. Britt was earlier passed over for promotion despite his being "unanimously recommended for major by the officers present with the regt. at the time," an event which caused "much bad feeling . . . which would be alleviated by Capt. Britt's promotion to Lt. Colonel." Folds are toned with areas of separation. There is a slight smudge below Zook's signature, but it does not appear to affect it.

Zook was promoted to brigadier general the following month. During the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2), Zook was cut down by rifle fire, taking rounds in the shoulder, abdomen, and chest. He died the following day, one of nine generals (both Union and Confederate) to lose their life at Gettysburg.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
