    Description

[Gettysburg Casualty]. Union Colonel Patrick "Paddy" O'Rorke Carte de Visite and Document Twice Signed "P.H. O'Rorke." Measuring 2.5" x 4", O'Rorke is seen in a vignetted chest up portrait, in uniform. Rockwood, New York backstamp is found along the lower edge on the verso. A mirror image of the name "O'Rorke" is seen at the lower right corner of the photograph, having been written on the verso. Minor damage to the lower left corner of the mount does not affect the image.

With the photograph is the discharge of Abraham Dewitte, one partially-printed page, 8" x 10", "Camp near Falmouth, Va," February 19, 1863. Dewitte, a native of Holland, was a private in the 140th New York Infantry who was being discharged due to a disability. O'Rorke signs the discharge as colonel of the regiment. He signs a second time in an endorsement on the verso, approving the discharge and forwarding the document on to his superiors as commander of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Fifth Army Corps. There is some separation along the folds with areas of very minor paper loss at the intersections of the horizontal and vertical folds. Folds are lightly toned. Spots of staining and foxing can be seen in places. Three binding holes at the upper edge.

Patrick O'Rorke (1837-1863), a native of Ireland, graduated first in his class at the U.S. Military Academy shortly after the outbreak of the war. A member of the Corps of Engineers, he participated in the First Battle of Manassas before being sent to the nation's capital to prepare the city's defenses. He sailed south with the Port Royal Expedition where he assisted in constructing batteries that led to the surrender of Fort Pulaski. Upon his return north, he was appointed colonel of the 140th New York and engaged at the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. During the second day of fighting at Gettysburg, the men of the 140th were reinforcing units in the defense of Little Round Top when O'Rorke grabbed the regiment's colors and mounted a rock to inspire the men. He was shot down with a bullet through the neck and died instantly.
