"Fuss & Feathers" Winfield Scott Autograph Letter Signed recommends the arrest of a fellow war hero for being drunk. Two pages, 5" x 8", n.p. October 21, 1845. Winfield Scott's bravery on the northern front in the war of 1812 brought him the honor of a brevet major general. He writes as general in chief of the army to William Marcy, secretary of war, that he has received information from a confidential source that Col. George Croghan has been seen in Baltimore in a condition calculated to bring disgrace on the service. "...Perhaps the secretary may think it proper to instruct an officer to inquire into the circumstances & if they be verified, to bring him to his place of arrest..." Croghan was the hero who valiantly defended Fort Stephenson and Meig against overwhelming some 700 British forces and 200 Indians with only 130 men and a single piece of artillery. The nephew of George Rogers Clark, he was brevetted a lieutenant colonel, awarded a gold medal for bravery, and made inspector general. Very fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
