    Fort Sumter - War Begins

[Fort Sumter]. Union Major Robert Anderson Signature and Cover. Following South Carolina's secession from the United States, Maj. Robert Anderson moved his garrison from Fort Moultrie to the more secure Fort Sumter. One month before the guns around Charleston Harbor opened up on Anderson's garrison at Fort Sumter, he sent this autograph to an admirer reading, in full:

    "Fort Sumter SC
    March 7, 1861
    Very Respectfully
    Your ob. servt.
    Robert Anderson
    Major USA"

Folds are beginning to separate at the edges, else fine.

Accompanying the signature is the original transmittal envelope addressed (in Anderson's hand) to William K. Ponder[?] of Providence, Rhode Island, and postmarked from Charleston, South Carolina, dated March 8, 1861. Of note is the red wax seal on the verso bearing Anderson's personal "RA" seal.
