[Fort Sumter]: Autographed Letter Signed Written from Fort Sumter in March 1861.
An autograph letter signed, one page, 5" x 7.75", Fort Sumter; March 21, 1861, from Dr. Samuel W. Crawford to the Postmaster in New York.

    "Dear Sir

I have been informed that there is a letter to my address in your office. Will you be kind enough to enclose it to me at once. Postage stamp is enclosed.
    Yours truly
    S. W. Crawford M.D.
On the reverse of Crawford's letter, the Postmaster Secretary wrote the following response to Dr. Crawford, dated March 25, 1861.

There is no letter in this office for you, either need for postage or otherwise.
I can assure you that no letter for you, or my friend, Maj. Anderson, or any other officer at Fort Sumter would be detained, and that every man in this office would deem it a privilege to be allowed to pay the postage on such a letter.

    Very respectfully
    R.O. Morgan

This letter from Crawford was written at a very perilous time for Major Robert Anderson and his troops at isolated Fort Sumter, surrounded by South Carolina fortifications and dwindling food and supplies, resulting from South Carolina militia forces preventing resupply by the Federal government.

An interesting letter written weeks before the bombardment and evacuation of Fort Sumter.

    Condition: Light toning, else fine.

More Information: Samuel Wylie Crawford (1829-1892) was a United States Army surgeon and a notable Union general in the Civil War. Crawford was the surgeon on duty at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, during the Confederate bombardment in April 1861, which represented the start of the Civil War. Despite his purely medical background, he was in command of several of the artillery pieces returning fire from the fort.
