[Enola Gay]. Paul W. Tibbets, Jr., Thomas Ferebee, and Theodore J. Van Kirk, Enola Gay Crew Members, Signed Photograph. Photograph, 10" x 8", [Tinian Island?]; [1945]. Photograph signed on November 19, 1990 by "Theodore J. Van Kirk Navigator", "Paul W. Tibbetts Pilot", and "Thomas Ferebee Bombardier 11/19/90." The three crewmen are in uniform and standing on the runway in front of the Enola Gay aircraft.

The Enola Gay was a Boeing B-29 bomber, named after Enola Tibbets, the mother of the pilot Colonel Paul Tibbets. On August 6, 1945, the bomber became the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb in warfare. The bomb, code-named "Little Boy," was targeted at the city of Hiroshima, Japan, and caused the near-complete destruction of the city. Enola Gay participated in the second atomic attack as the weather reconnaissance aircraft for the primary target of Kokura, but clouds and drifting smoke resulted in a secondary target, Nagasaki, being bombed instead.
