    Description

[Creek War of 1836]. William Schley Autograph Letter Signed "Wm Schley". Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Macon, Georgia, February 6, 1836. Addressed to John H. Eaton, Governor of Florida, detailing preparations for the defense of Picolata, Florida. Schley as Governor of Georgia raised a local volunteer militia to go west to fight the Creeks. After being rebuked by Washington for help, the Creeks took it upon themselves to fight back against invading white settlers. Georgia was experiencing a growing number of attacks, and Schley joined General Winfield Scott's army to combat the Native American forces. In part:

"I am happy to learn that Col. Clinch is safe and in a situation to maintain his post. We had some fears that he, too, had been cut off...Genl. Scott whom I saw on Wednesday last in Milledgeville, has asked me to send him 1500 mounted infantry, which I told him I could not do because I had no power to make a main force suit himself with a horse, but that I could send him as many as I could, tho' also my opinion that he would not want such troops, and that infantry would be better. His intention is to collect a considerable force at Picolata and at Tampa and then form a junction between them so as to cut off the Indians from the peninsula and keep them above a line between those two places. Whilst I am now writing the battalion of volunteers are marching to the river to go on board the boats. I will write you again from Milledgeville and more fully..."

Condition: Lightly toned along bottom margin, usual mail folds, light foxing on verso. Some paper loss has occurred where seal was broken, soiling and staining on verso.
