[Confederate Prisoners of War]. General Isaac R. Trimble Autograph Endorsement Signed "I. R. Trimble." Two pages, 5.75" x 7.25", Johnson's Island [Ohio], February 13, 1864. Confederate General Isaac R. Trimble (1802-1888), a veteran of some of the fiercest battles of the Civil War, was acting as aide to Gen. Ewell during the Gettysburg Campaign when he was given overall command of Pender's division. While leading his command during what is today known as Pickett's charge, he was wounded in the leg (which he lost) and captured.

He was taken west and imprisoned on Johnson's Island. Nearly a year into his incarceration, he placed his endorsement, "J.R.Trimble / of Maryland / Maj Genl P.A.C.S / wounded & captured Gettysburg / July 3d 1863," on the verso of this list of men and officers imprisoned on the island. Each letter of the alphabet is written along the edge with a number directly after corresponding to the number of prisoners whose last names bear that letter totaling 2,612 men. This is further broken down by rank with one major general and five brigadier generals imprisoned there in addition to twenty-two "Cittizens."

Countersigned with two additional endorsements by Major and Assistant Adjutant General Carvel Call, on the staff of Gen. Trimble, and Thomas Hollingsworth, a member of J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry. Light waterstaining along the right edge. Left edge is chipped.
