    Description

    "Colored Voter" Registration and Oath Signed by Kender Lampton and issued by the "United States of America, State of Texas, Original No. 1277, Register's Office, Nacogdoches County." One sheet with partly-printed text on both sides, 8.75" x 11", September 23, 1867, printed by Peter O'Donnell of New Orleans, recognizing that Lampton, a "Colored Voter," had taken an oath to, among other things, "support the Constitution." "Colored Voter" is written vertically in large letters one year prior to the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment and three years prior to the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment. Signed by James H. Everett, the register. Smoothed folds. Toned with some dampstaining.
