[Colored Troops] and [Medal of Honor]. Milton M. Holland Carte de Visite. 2.25" x 4". Featuring a full-length studio view of the young, black soldier in Union uniform wearing his Medal of Honor over his heart. To the left of the Medal of Honor is another medal-the Army of the James medal given to U.S. Colored troops by General Benjamin Butler. Butler had recommend a captain's commission for Holland, but the request was denied because of Holland's race (his highest rank was a sergeant major). His father was a white slave owner and his mother a black slave. Holland joined the Union Army and recruited close to 150 other black men into Co. "C" in the 5th U.S. Colored Infantry. He received America's highest military honor for his valor during the Battle of Chaffin's Farm in Virginia where, on September 29, 1864, even though Confederate bullets wounded him, he remained in the field to lead his company. Stamped on the reverse by photographer E. S. Walker of Columbus, Ohio. The CDV bears some age-toning and minor stains. The reverse bears soiling and a few penciled annotations.
