    [Civil War]. Union General John A. Dix Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 7.75", on "Head-Quarters, Department of the East" letterhead, New York City, July 16, 1864, to Edward A. Walton asking that he "send me the amt. of my insurance . . . and I will fwd you a check." In addition to serving as a major general in the U.S. Army, Dix served in the U.S. Senate, as governor of New York, and as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Smoothed folds, ink ghosting from folding, and mounting remnants on the verso.
