Description
[Civil War].Turner Ashby Confederate Abstract Signed. One partially-printed page, 8" x 10", Winchester [Virginia], circa February 1862. Ashby approves the payment of $18.42 to Capt. Henderson for a pine plank used to make bunks while on detached service. The page on which this manifest was written is headed "The United Confederate States." Docketed on the verso. Folds.Ashby (1828-1862), Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's cavalry commander, known as the Black Knight of the Confederacy, was by all accounts a brilliant leader as he waged war in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. He was killed in action near Harrisburg. Though he had been appointed a brigadier general just two weeks before his death, it was never confirmed by the Confederate Senate.
