[Civil War] Samuel C. Upshaw Autograph Letter Signed to General Daniel Ruggles. "Sam. C. Upshaw." Two and one-quarter pages, 4.5" 7.75", on blue-lined paper, Holly Springs [Mississippi], September 8, 1862. Upshaw is writing to General Ruggles asking for assistance in acquiring a promotion. He writes in part:

"I am now a private in Cavalry Co. attached to "Waul's Legion" Texas vols. Heretofore I have been an officer in an infantry Regiment from this state in Va. Had the pleasure of sharing the glories of the battle of Manassas...I profess to know something of infantry tactics. I should like very much to occupy some position in your staff. If you can do anything to better my present condition please let me know immediately by letter..."

The paper is thin and some of the ink has bled through to each side, but the text is legible and remains unaffected. Very fine.
