[Civil War] Outlawing of Liquor Trafficking Among the Troops signed "Jos. C. Wheeler, Capt." Four pages, November 26, 1863, "Provost Marshall's Office", Charleston, to Brigadier General Alfred Nattie Duffie, concerning an order issued by Duffie "prohibiting the traffic in Spirituous Liquors inside of your lines." With folds and some foxing and staining, else very good.More Information:
In this letter, Captain Wheeler agrees with Brigadier General Wheeler's recent order to prohibit the trafficking of liquor. In part: "Permit me to congratulate you upon the excellent order you have issued recently, prohibiting the traffic in Spirituous Liquors inside of your lines. . . . It's wholesome effect upon the soldiers is quite visible to the most casual observer, even now--notwithstanding the order has been in operation just a few days. Great mourning and lamentations are always heard upon the adoption of such decisions measured by a certain kind of mercenary citizens who follow up the Army to grab every dime of the poor soldiers earnings. . . . and instead of devoting their time & talents to aid their government in putting down this 'Hell-born Rebellion' will do anything to make money, no matter how much what they are doing will retard the army, in that patriotic work. . . . Since I have been connected with the army I have witnessed the sad effect of Whiskey & other intoxicating drinks upon the army and so few efforts to get rid of its influence."
