    [Civil War]. Henry Wayne Autograph Letter Signed and Letter Signed "Henry C. Wayne." Brigadier General Henry Wayne (1810-1883) was appointed adjutant and inspector general by Governor Brown at the beginning of the Civil War. In that capacity, he organized Georgia's military into brigades, regiments, and companies.

    The first letter, handwritten by Wayne, one page, 7.5" x 9.75", on State of Georgia Adjutant and Inspector General's Office letterhead, Milledgeville, May 23, 1863, to General Gustavus W. Smith conveying Smith's appointment as aide-de-camp to the governor. "His Excellency begs your acceptance of the Office, and desires me to say that the duties of the position will not...interfere with your business...but that he is desirous of securing for himself and the State, you valuable services, should the incursions of the Enemy upon Georgia...demand your tried Military Experience and abilities."

    The second, one page, 7.5" x 9.75", on State of Georgia Adjutant and Inspector General's Office letterhead, Milledgeville, May 23, 1863, to General Gustavus W. Smith. The letter is the aforementioned appointment of Smith as aide-de-camp, in full: "The Governor and Commander in Chief of the State of Georgia, reposing special trust and confidence in your Patriotism, Valor, Fidelity and Abilities, hereby appoints you one of his Aides de Camp with rank of Colonel; and all Officers and Soldiers of the State of Georgia, whether of the Line, Volunteers or Militia, are commanded to respect and obey you accordingly."

    More Information:

    Major General G. W. Smith (1821-1896), a veteran of the Mexican War, had resigned his commission in February 1863, denied the request of the governor and finished out the war as the personal aide of General Pierre G. T. Beauregard . After the war he served as the head of the Etowah Iron Works.
