[Civil War]. Henry J. Hunt Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages, 7.75" x 10", "Artillery Head Quarters, Army of the Potomac," January 17, 1865. Writing to Major R. B. Ricketts regarding the "...assignment of field guns to the works on your front for which ammunition is to be kept in the magazines." What follows is a list of fourteen forts and batteries, types of cannon, and number of rounds for each. He further orders that "Guns of the kind here mentioned will if not already in position be so placed as soon as practicable. And when so placed no gun will be relieved by one of a different description, without special authority..." and "...No ammunition must be moved without order. The ammunition required - and no more, amounting to 100 rounds per gun, will be place in the magazines."

The orders come due to reports " me that ammunition has been transferred from one fort to another without authority...By the returns it appears that your ordinance officer is responsible for many thousands of rounds over and above what he can move or for the possession of which he has no authority...I wish you to take immediate measures to have this subject attended to." Folds; some weakness in the folds has resulted in light separation at the edges and minor paper loss at the fold intersections, none of which affects the text. Folds are moderately tone.
