    Description

[Benedict Arnold]. Captain Benedict Arnold III Account Sheet Signed "Bendt Arnold." Three integral pages, 6.25" x 8.25", n.p. [Connecticut], n.d. [circa 1754]. Capt. Arnold (1683-1761), the father of Revolutionary War General Benedict Arnold V, here acknowledges monies owed to Jonathan Trumble (the future governor of Connecticut, who changed the original spelling of his name to Trumbull later in life) on an account for goods spanning the years 1750 through 1754. The entire account is itemized, including a credit of £1150:9:2 owed to Arnold by Trumble. Arnold signs on January 31, 1752, that the account has been settled for £1171:0:8. Weakened folds are showing some separation and loss of paper at the intersections. Some of the folds have been archivally repaired.

Jonathan Trumbull Sr. was a merchant and politician who became the colonial governor of Connecticut in 1769 and the governor of the new state of Connecticut throughout the war.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
