[Battle of Fayetteville, North Carolina] Two Autograph Documents From Acting Master of the U.S.S. Eolus Regarding Supporting Sherman During the Battle of Fayetteville. Each document measures approximately 7.25" x 12.5" and each has an integral second leaf. The documents originate from the Acting Master of the Eolus, E. S. Keyser and both are dated March 15, 1865, and were written "off Fayetteville". In one example, a retained copy of a correspondence to General W. T. Sherman, Keyser responds to a request for a tug by Sherman and also gives the status of the U.S.S. Maratanza, commanded by Lt. Commander George Young. The other document is addressed to Lt. Commander Young by Keyser transmitting Sherman's orders for deployment. Accompanying the two documents is a transmittal envelope from Sherman's Headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi. Both documents are quite legible and remain in bold, bright condition. In March, General William Tecumseh Sherman was at Fayetteville, North Carolina, where the Eolus and Maratanza, rendezvoused with him, opening communications between his position and the coast.
