Mary Todd Lincoln: Presentation Letter Organizer. 9.5" x 7.25" leather Correspondance folder. Front and back have a deeply impressed diamond pattern with gold-stamped border. The lock plate is a polished steel escutcheon. It opens to reveal two components: a top part with three compartments for "Lettres Répondues.", "Lettres à Répondre." and "Adresses et Notes." The other compartment houses a blank scrapbook-style booklet, inscribed on the front cover: "Presented to Henry L. Fowler/ by his friend/ Mrs. A. Lincoln/ Chicago/ June 14th 1867." Mary Todd Lincoln spoke fluent French and was an admirer of all things French, so it is understandable this writing accessory would appeal to her. Henry Fowler was a childhood friend and playmate of Tad Lincoln during this period. Excellent condition with minimal wear.

This is part of a group of Mary Todd Lincoln items that descended in the family of a Mrs. Fowler of Chicago, a neighbor and friend of the former First Lady. Henry Fowler was her son. A copy of a partial 20th century inventory and Letter of Provenance accompanies the lot.
