Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed "Mary Lincoln." Two pages of a bifolium, 4" x 6", Bedford; August 15, 1868. Written on mourning stationary and addressed to Mrs. Elizabeth Ellet, the letter thanks Ellet for her support and describes her European travels. The letter reads, in full:"On yesterday I received a note from our amiable friend Mrs. Mack, with your own pleasant note & enclosures. I am very grateful for your kindness now, but will certainly feel more so, should I find myself in a strange land, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and perhaps sighing for a few loved home friends. I hope it will be my good misfortune, to meet you in Europe, in the event of you going abroad. Mrs. Mack, I presume, still contemplates the visit this autumn, which she had arranged last spring. Your kind attentions to me, will always be highly appreciated. I trust some day it may be my good fortune to thank you personally for your favors."
Following her husband's death, Mary Lincoln and her son Tad travelled to Europe, where they lived for several years. They spent the majority of their time in Germany and England, but also travelled to famous sites throughout the Continent and the British Isles. Elizabeth Ellet was an American writer and historian who was the first author to record the history of women's contributions during the American Revolution. Her book The Women of the American Revolution was published in 1848.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
