Mary Todd Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed with Transmittal Cover with Franking Signature. Three pages on mourning letterhead, 4.5" x 7". Clifton House, Room 21, [Chicago]. The transmittal cover is postmarked June 12, [1871]. A letter to Mrs. Edward Fowler, a neighbor and mother of a playmate of Tad's. Writing a month prior to Tad's death: "It has been to me, a source of much regret that when you have so kindly called to see my darling sick boy & myself, owing to the nervous illness, which at times prostrates him - we have been unable to see you. But now, we can but hope & pray that dear Tad is very slowly as his physicians pronounce him improving. It will be a great pleasure to see you again..." Signed, "Mary Lincoln." Tad never regained his health; he died at Clifton House the following month on July 15.

Included with the letter is the original transmittal cover addressed in Mary Todd's hand, and with a franking signature, "Free / Mary Lincoln." This letter, along with the letter offered as lot 49131 in this auction, was obtained from a direct descendant of Mrs. Fowler more than 20 years ago, and is offered here for the first time at auction.

Condition: Flattened folds, and toning. Some wear, resulting in minor separations at folds at margins. Ink stains on verso. Transmittal cover has heavy wear and soiling. It has been neatly sliced open at the left. With bumped corners.
