Van Buren endorses promotion for Robert E. Lee

Martin Van Buren Autograph Endorsement Signed "MVB" as President, on the integral page of a military memorandum from Colonel J.J. Abert to J.R. Poinsett. Three pages with Van Buren's endorsement on verso, 8" x 10", December 12, 1838. Abert's memorandum is submitting the names of several engineers from promotion including future Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and noted map surveyor William H. Emory.

Abert's report reads in part: "...2nd: The suspended nominations are, Gram, McClellan, Hood as Captains; Lee, Humphreys, Emory as 1st Lieuts; Litgraves as 2nd Lieutenant. 3rd: All of these are Citizens, resigned Lieutenants, several of whom had been long on Topographical duty before they resigned, and all are eminently qualified for those duties. 4th: McClellan, Lee, Emory and Litgraves, were employed as Civil Engineers, on a survey on the coast of N. Carolina under the act of 3rd March 1837, the parties for this survey being organized soon after the passage of this act...I will conclude that after all that has been said on this subject, and with all the reflection which time has allowed since the nominations were first made; were the matter to be done over, from a thorough conviction, of the proper qualifications, mental, moral and physical, and that their reputation is without reproach, of the suspended nominations, I should again submit them to your consideration if allowed to act on my own judgement."

After reviewing the document, Van Buren has endorsed it on verso: "With the President's best respects & a request that Mr. Fairfield will hand the within to Chief Justice Shepley after he has perused it himself. M.V.B."

An excellent relic documenting Robert E. Lee's early career, but also an important association to other notable military figures.

Condition: Usual mail folds, light toning. Reinforced along some folds with tape. Pencil notations on verso.
