    Dr. King accepts the Spingarn Medal for his leadership during the Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Martin Luther King, Jr. Signed Typescript of his remarks delivered in accepting the 42nd Spingarn Medal at the NAACP 48th Annual Convention. 14 pages, 8.5" x 11"; Detroit; June 28, 1957. The Spingarn Medal (instituted in 1914) is awarded annually by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for outstanding achievement. Dr. King received the medal in 1957 leadership and work during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Signed on the first page at top right corner: "Best Wishes to Ruth / M. L. King Jr." According to our consignor, who is the son of the woman who originally received the autograph, it was obtained at the event.

    A brief excerpt from the address: "... In accepting this award I would like to feel that you are really honoring the 50,000 Negro citizens of Montgomery, Alabama, who more than a year ago came to see that it is ultimately more honorable to walk in dignity than ride in humiliation..."

    Condition: Stapled at the top left corner, with old staple holes, and creasing. All pages are toned, a bit darker at the edges.
