    Marie Louise Autograph Letter Signed "Louise". One page with blank integral, 4.25" x 6.75", Basle [Switzerland]; May 3, 1814. Written in French, a letter to "Le Comtesse de Beauvau." Marie Louise was the second wife of Napoleon and Empress of the French. She was born in Vienna, the daughter of Francis II, Holy Roman Emperor. It was his intentions that the arranged marriage between Marie and Napoleon would strengthen the ties between the Austrian and First French empires. Napoleon had abdicated his throne only three weeks before the date of this letter.

    Together with the original transmittal cover addressed in her hand.

    Condition: Gently toned, with flattened mail fold and light creasing. Cover has some soiling and wear; wax seal remains intact, as flap has been neatly torn open around it.
