    Description

Marie Curie Typed Letter Signed "M. Curie." One page, 5.5" x 8.5", Paris; January 20, 1913. The letter is typed on Faculty of Sciences of Paris, Institute of Radium, Curie Laboratory letterhead and written entirely in French. In this letter, Curie, the first female recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, addresses an unnamed recipient ("Cher Monsieur"), in full:

"Dear Sir, I thank you very sincerely for the analysis of the salt water a bottle of which you forwarded to me. This bottle arrived in good condition and will be used for research. Kindly accept my best wishes."

Marie Curie (1867-1934) discovered the atoms of radium and polonium, which were both named by her in honor of her Polish ancestry. Following the death of her husband Pierre Curie in 1906, she took his place as Professor of General Physics in the Faculté des Sciences, the first time a woman had held this position. Despite a public scandal in 1910, Marie continued to focus on her work, and eventually her efforts would be rewarded with the building of the Radium Institute, which was completed in 1914, one year after this letter was written.

Condition: Usual mail fold, lightly toned throughout, and ink is somewhat faded. Some small pencil notations on verso. Otherwise very good.
