Marie Curie Inscribes a Copy of Her Book to Scientist Henry Fairfield Osborn

Marie Curie. Pierre Curie. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1923. First edition (published one year before the French edition). An English inscription on laid paper has been inserted after the half-title page: "To Mrs. Henry Fairfield Osborn with the best wishes of [signed] M. Curie" 8vo, 242 pages. Blue cloth over boards with title in gilt on the spine. Publisher's dust jacket. Several plate illustrations throughout. Lightly worn.

Marie Curie (1867-1934) discovered the atoms of radium and polonium, which were both named by her in honor of her Polish ancestry. According to the dust jacket, this is the "first time the story of the discovery of radium is told by its discoverer. Madame Curie, besides giving a full account of her husband's life and his scientific work, includes in this volume a sketch of her own life and the story of her recent visit to America." Pierre Curie died in 1906 after having his skull crushed by a horse-drawn cart when he fell in the road in Paris.

Henry Fairfield Osborn (1857-1935) was a geologist and paleontologist who served as president of the American Museum of Natural History for a quarter of a century. He is best remembered today for naming several well-known dinosaur species, including Tyrannosaurus rex and Velociraptor.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
