Marie Curie sends condolences for the death of a colleague, Albert Dastre

Marie Curie Autograph Letter Signed "M. Curie." One page, 5.25" x 8.5", Paris, October 31, 1917, in French on letterhead from the Faculty of Sciences of Paris, Institute of Radium, Curie Laboratory. In this letter, Curie, the first female recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, addresses an unnamed recipient ("Chère Madame", likely the wife of Professor Albert Dastre).

[In part] "I was hoping when I wrote to you that Mr. Dastre was recovering from the accident in which he was the victim. I am very distressed that this hope was not realized and I beg of you to accept for you and Mlle. Dastre, my very sincere condolences. I had very much wished that you be spared this loss."

Curie and Dastre were colleagues at the Sorbonne, where Dastre (1844-1917), a French physiological chemist, became the chair of physiology in 1886. His death occurred at the front during World War I. Marie Curie (1867-1934) discovered the atoms of radium and polonium, which were both named by her in honor of her Polish ancestry. This letter is toned.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
