Marcus Garvey Autograph Letters (Two) Signed. One page each, both are 8.25" x 11" and on letterhead reading, "Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities' League." Both are appeals for donations. The first, dated "June, July, August 1934," requests donations for the upcoming International Convention of the Negro Race. Toned with some soiling. Separation beginning along folds. Written in the upper left corner, "Mrs. S[arah]. Q. McGee List." (Mrs. McGee lived in Bakersfield, California.) In part:

"This is a direct appeal to you to do your bit in helping a worthy cause. Our race has struggled amidst the difficulties of time to hold its own and to reach the point of vantage, but the surrounding difficulties have been great, and now the intelligence of the race is taxed to find a way out economically, industrially, commercially, socially and politically. So as to make it possible to find this way out, the Universal Negro Improvement Association will be staging its great International Convention of the Negro race from the 1st to the 31st August of the present year; the object being to discuss and arrange a programme that will lead to the general salvation of the race and help in its universal development. . . . On this Convention hinges the great hopes of a struggling people. . . . We are asking you to donate something, even though it be a sacrifice on your part."

The second letter, dated March 1935, asks for donations to finance the move of the U.N.I.A.-A.C.L. headquarters to London. This letter has completely separated along two folds, with separation starting along another fold. Garvey signs in bold, black ink. The letter reads in part:

"I am enclosing you herewith a collecting list asking you to solicit contributions to the expenses of establishing and financing our new International Headquarters in London. I sail from Jamaica for London this month and hope on arrival there on the 26th of March to receive a letter from you with whatsoever you have collected."

Also included is a lined form reading at the top, "Donations toward U.N.I.A. Headquarters."

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
