Manuel de Escandón, Conde de Serragorda Manuscript Document Signed. One page, 8" x 12"; Nuevo Santander; January 24, 1795. Addressed to Juan Jose Ballí, a directive issued by Governor Bruno Diaz de Salcedo that all ministers in the missions remain visible at all times and comply with their duties in providing continual assistance in the indoctrination of the Indians, to bring sacraments to the sick and continue to fulfill their fates in accordance to law. The directive was initially issued by Salcedo on January 22, 1794 in Potosi, and is translated for distribution on January 24, 1795. Signed by Manuel de Escandón at the conclusion, "El Conde de Serragorda."

Efforts to settle the northern frontiers of New Spain were begun by José de Ecandón, Manuel's father, decades earlier. He received by viceregal order, the territory extending from Tampico to the San Antonio River, which he named Colonia del Nuevo Santander in honor of his native province. Escandón explored the territory in 1746 and 1747, and designated sites for settlements and missions, including a mission and presidio at La Bahía. The execution of Escandón's plans are recognized as one of the most significant accomplishments in the history of the colonization of New Spain. Upon the death of his father, Manuel de Escandón assumed his title and offices. As evidenced by the document offered here, the missionary work of the Franciscans among the native population played a critical role in their success in establishing these settlements.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
