Description

Lyndon B. Johnson Autograph Note (Unsigned) at the bottom of page one of a typed memorandum from Dick Goodwin regarding Johnson's speeches during the 1964 presidential campaign. Two pages on White House letterhead, 8" x 10.5"; September 1, 1964. Goodwin's memo outlines the basic structure that Johnson's speeches should take. The second part of the memo suggests 4 topics regarding domestic affairs as follows: "1. The great moral issues of this campaign which transcend party and ideology... 2. The revolution of the sixties. How our world is changing... 3. Full employment and automation... 4. Policy for continued prosperity..." Johnson has noted below in black marker: "Ditto - Fine / get going / OK." Goodwin's memo continues on a second sheet, listing a total of 9 topics on domestic affairs, and 7 topics on foreign affairs.

Richard N. Goodwin had previously served as President Kennedy's speech writer, and continued in this role for Johnson, eventually becoming his special assistant in 1964. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Staple holes at top, and traces of erased pencil notations. The ink of Johnson's endorsement has some dampstaining, resulting in smudging. Otherwise near fine.
