Lyndon B. Johnson Autograph Letter Signed "Lyndon." Written on a 5" x 3.75" card bearing a vignette of Johnson's ranch, this undated letter is addressed to Justice Arthur J. Goldberg and his wife, Dorothy, in part: "All you did in planning came out in one of the most beautiful . . . dinners we've attended. You were thoughtful, gracious and generous and we will always appreciate it and remember. Thanks again - [signed] Lyndon." Autograph letters by President Johnson are exceedingly scarce making this a particularly attractive piece. It is in fine condition.

Accompanying the Johnson letter is a letter of provenance by a descendant of Justice Goldberg as acting executor of the estate, dated October 10, 2013, and penned on Justice Goldberg's personal Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, reading in part: "This Certificate of Authenticity . . . attests to the provenance of the accompanying hand-written note from President Lyndon B. Johnson to Justice Goldberg. This A.N.S. derived from Justice Goldberg's estate, and prior to its sale . . . on October 6, 2013, had never left the possession of his family."

Arthur Goldberg (1908-1990) had served in the U.S. Supreme Court nearly three years when he was persuaded to resign his seat by President Johnson to fill the vacancy left by the death of Adlai Stevenson of ambassador to the United Nations. Goldberg accepted in the hopes that he could influence peace in Vietnam and resume his seat on the Court once the crisis was abated. He resigned his post as ambassador in 1968.
