Lucy Stone Autograph Letter Signed "Lucy Stone". Three pages, 4" x 5", Gardner, Massachusetts, September 1, 1893, to "Mrs. Claflin" (perhaps Adelaide Avery Claflin). Written the month before she died, Stone attempts to sort out Mrs. Claflin's life after some unnamed tragedy. She writes in part: "When your letter came I could only read it with sympathetic heart ache. I am still too ill for anything but I wanted to say would you not be wise to tell your mother and to take her to your house. She would be there and no doubt would spare you as much her income in your time of stress as she could are the rich mother of three children who all need a home." In closing Stone makes the cryptic comment "my stomach seems to be giving out." She died a month and a half later. The letter bears the usual old fold creases but is in excellent condition. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.
