Lucretia Mott Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 7.25"; "Roadside, near Phila."; December 19, 1865. Mott writes to Quaker activist and publisher, Edwin A. Studwell: "Had I the power I would gladly contribute somewhat of interest for your Periodical - The few desultory remarks made in Germantown at the close of the sermon, and following Wm. L. Garrison, are not remembered with a distinctness that would warrant even an attempted abstract. Those accustomed to Quaker discourses can readily see that they do not bear repetition. I have circulated the copies sent by Edward S. Bunker of your Prospectus, &I hope subscribers will follow... L. Mott."

The "Periodical" Mott is referring to is likely The Friend, a Quaker newspaper that had begun publishing earlier in 1866. Studwell and Bunker both served on the Executive Committee for the paper. Studwell would later become business manager of Susan B. Anthony's newspaper, the Revolution. Lot includes an engraving of Mott, as well as two images cut from a newspaper.

Condition: Letter has been cropped, tightly at bottom, affecting the last line of a postscript. Usual mail folds, with light soiling thereat on verso. Letter is disbound, but we are unsure if Mott has used an endpaper from a book or if the letter was previously bound into a grangerized volume.
