DescriptionLt. Calvin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed with New Orleans Occupation Content. Three pages of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", Carrollton, Louisiana; August 24, 1863. Addressed to his sweetheart, Cordeal, he writes about the Union occupation of New Orleans, General Butler's handling of martial law, and Pierce's visit to the city. It reads in part: "...Yesterday I visited the City of New Orleans under military rule the City – presents – a clean quiet and orderly appearance, business goes on as brisk as ever. The Streets are kept very clean, never so clean before. This will prevent a great amount of disease. I find many of the Citizens are a great admirer of Butler. They liked his administration of affairs first rate. Take it altogether I don't think the City was ever in a better condition as far as health, cleanliness and order is concerned than at the present time." Signed, "Calvin."
