    Description

Louis Pasteur Autograph Letter Signed "L. Pasteur." One and one-half pages, 5.25" x 8.25", n.p., "le lundi 26 5h . . . [illegible]" (September 26, 1881), in French. Pasteur, considered a founder of the science of microbiology, inquires of an unnamed friend about the arrival of a ship bearing a crew sick with yellow fever.

[In part] "I am very confused. Am I to go to Sanillac tomorrow by train at 11:52 or am I to await news from you regarding Richelieu's health? There has been no response so far to my telegram sent yesterday to Dr. Talmy. I hope he is on his way. I will telegraph him again the moment that Richelieu arrives. If I do not arrive on the 11:52 train would you kindly tell me what you know about Richelieu."

In September 1881, a ship whose crew was contaminated with yellow fever, arrived in a harbor near Bordeaux. Pasteur (1822-1895) hurried to the region, hoping to experiment on the sick, but all had died by the time he arrived. While he waited, he heard that the Richelieu, whose crew was also sick with yellow fever, was set to arrive soon. This letter was sent in the confusion of what his next action should be. Dr. Talmy, whom Pasteur was impatiently awaiting, was a young physician who had recently introduced himself by offering to help with Pasteur's experiments on the Richelieu's sick crew. When the ship arrived, however, the sick had died and had been thrown overboard, frustrating Pasteur by precluding possible important discoveries. This letter is toned with smoothed folds. Pasteur's signature is large and clear.
