    Description

Lord Horatio Nelson Autograph Letter Signed "Nelson & Bronte". One page, 7.25" x 9", January 28, 1803. Lord Nelson writes to a Mr. Buffin, informing him of his appointment to be "Carpenter of the Retribution" in the Admiralty. The HMS Retribution (previously the HMS Hermione) was renamed on January 31, 1800.

Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté, was the best known British flag officer in the Napoleonic Wars. He served in the Royal Navy for most of his life and won a number of significant victories, most notably the Battle of Copenhagen, the Battle of the Nile, and the Battle of Trafalgar. In 1797, Nelson was hit in the right arm by a musket ball during the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Most of the right arm was amputated and within half an hour he had returned to issuing orders to his captains. For the rest of his life, Nelson would excuse himself for not writing longer letters due to being left-handed. On October 21, 1805, Lord Nelson was killed aboard the HMS Victory in the Battle of Trafalgar, his last victory.

Condition: Unevenly toned with some dampstaining. Weakness along the mail folds, partial separations and small bits of paper loss have been reinforced with archival tape on verso.
