Lord George Gordon Byron Autograph Letter Signed. One page with address leaf on verso, 4" x 5", n.p., n.d. Addressed to John Taaffe, the brief letter reads: "I have not sent the papers to England but to the H.r Minitor [?] by express. I have come to observe that your deposition is absolutely necessary & not to be dispensed with & must add my wonder that you should wish to recall your word from this occasion."

Famed English poet and a leading figure in Romanticism, Lord Byron also had a reputation for being extravagant, unconventional, flamboyant, and given to extremes of temper. His many personal affairs were scandalous and controversial, and he was considered by some to be a sexual predator. Rumors of marital violence, adultery, sodomy, and incest with a daughter were widely circulated during his lifetime.

Byron's odd behavior and shocking activities were even immortalized in fiction of the time. English writer John William Polidori used Lord Byron as the model for the anti-hero of his wildly popular 1819 novel The Vampyre, the first vampire story written in English. Byron was so outraged by Polidori's characterization of him that he initiated a lawsuit against his fellow author. It is possible that the letter offered here concerns that lawsuit. At the time The Vampyre was written, Byron was living abroad, making the connection to that lawsuit more probable. Faintly toned. Tipped-in to a sheet for an overall size of 8" x 11".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
