Description

Little Big Horn: A Legal Document Signed by Survivor Lieutenant Frank M. Gibson. Gibson joined the 7th as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1867. He participated in the Yellowstone and Black Hills expeditions in 1873-74, and was with Company H under Reno at Little Big Horn. He was appointed Commander of Company H on August 27, 1876, participated in the 1878 Nez Perce campaign, and was active in the Plains Wars through the 1880s.

Offered here is a military case document signed by Gibson on May 28, 1878 as "1st Lieut. 7th Cavalry" and judge advocate general of the court martial. It was an interesting case, involving a trooper having allowed an Army horse to run off. What makes the episode interesting is that a party was sent out to search unsuccessfully for the horse for two days, an indication of how important their mounts were to cavalry men of the day. A legal-size handwritten document in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
