    Description

Lieutenant General Maxwell Taylor Typed Letter Signed "Maxwell D. Taylor". One page, 7.25" x 10.5", San Francisco, California, February 26, 1953, writing to Norman Cousins to return photostats he had forwarded to him.

Taylor writes: "As I have no knowledge of this case, which falls beyond my purview, I do not feel qualified to offer advice in the matter." Accompanying the letter is the Photostat article titled "Appeal to Defenders of World Peace and Human Rights" that Cousins had sent to Taylor. The article covers the story of Mr. Wataru Kaji, who was allegedly kidnapped and tortured by an agency of the U.S. government. Kaji, whose real name was Mitsugi Seguchi, was a Japanese political activist and writer. He was sequestered for over a year, during which time he was tortured in an attempt to make him admit to being a spy for the Soviets. Kaji never confessed and was eventually released due to pressure from the Japanese people who had discovered his plight.

Condition: Documents and letter are lightly toned, with light soiling and staple holes at top left corner of all pages.
