    Description

    Letter of an Unknown Confederate Soldier of the 4th Texas Cavalry, Arizona Brigade Discussing a Skirmish in the Rio Grande Campaign. One page, recto and verso, 7.5" x 11.5", Camp near Ringold Barracks [Texas]; July 13, 1864. A lengthy letter sent by a soldier in Company H of the 4th Regiment, Arizona Brigade to an unidentified friend. He writes about serving under Col. John Salmon Ford and a fight along the Rio Grande River, resulting in numerous Union casualties. It reads in part:

    "...Myself and fourteen of my Company was in the fight that Old Ford had with the Federals on the Riogran River...on the 22th of June in which we Captured forty or [so] Prisoners 2 wagons 8 mules about 75 head of horses together...we fought them about one hour before they serindered. It is not known how many Federals was Killed...when we began to crowd them they attempted to cross a golch that was near them. I think we all killed several in it. all that was wonded in the sake drowned, I shot nine times and I think I struck some of them, we are doing better than I expetted when I came here...the other knight we thought we war surprised by the Yanks b[u]t it turned out to be some Mexicans herding Cattle..."

    Condition: Four small areas of paper loss along an old fold. Lightly soiled and toned.
