    Leonidas Polk War-Dated Letter

Leonidas Polk Autograph Letter Signed "L. Polk." One page, 8" x 12", "Hdqr. Polks Corps, Shelby Tenn," April 2, 1863, to Major General John C. Breckinridge who had served as vice president under President Buchanan. A major general in the Confederate Army in April 1863, Breckinridge received the following letter from Polk concerning Captain Robertson's report. In part: "I send you a paperr received today through the Adjunct Genl Officer of the Army at Tullahoma. It is not the paper I asked Capt. Robertson to send me and I thought myself very explicit in asking him for the Report you wished - his report to General [Braxton] Bragg. I have promptly asked him for a copy of that report. It shall be sent you so soon as received."

One year after writing this letter, "The Fighting Bishop" was scouting enemy positions with his staff when he was disemboweled by a Federal artillery shell at Pine Mountain near Marietta, Georgia. This letter is written in bold black ink. Smoothed folds.

    More Information:

Before the Civil War, Leonidas Polk (1806-1864) was a planter in Maury County, Tennessee, and a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana. (He had joined the Episcopal Church during his senior year at West Point.) He resigned his military commission in 1827 and was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1830. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis convinced Polk, the Bishop of Louisiana at the time, to accept a commission in the army of the Confederate States. Polk agreed and was commissioned a major general commanding Department No. 2 (roughly, the area between the Mississippi River and the Tennessee River) in 1861.
