DescriptionLeon Trotsky Typed Letter Signed "L. Trotsky." One page, 8.5" x 11", Büyükada; February 26, 1931. Written in German to publisher Charles Boni, the translation reads in full:
"I send you the fourth chapter back. Anyway, the numbering is wrong and the numbering I have given has not been taken into account, nor have the important, specified changes to the manuscript, which are disregarded in this chapter. This time, with the help of a good English translator, I was able to give you a little proof of how much the translation is ignominious. We shared the first two paragraphs of the chapter together, and the friend in question made four pages of comments about the inadequacies of these first two paragraphs. To continue the work did not make sense: Correcting this translation takes much more time than the preparation of a new translation. Thus, I consider the question with this translator as done and hope to get no more chapters from him." With a few emendations made in pen. The letter is also accompanied by photographs of Trotsky taken from a book.
Trotsky had been having difficulty finding a suitable translator for The Russian Revolution and felt that Boni was taking advantage of him. Boris Shishkin had translated the first volume, and Trotsky had been extremely displeased with his work. The work was ultimately translated into English by Max Eastman in 1932.
