Lawrence Sullivan Ross: An 1890 Land Grant Signed by the Legendary Ranger, Indian Fighter, Confederate General and Texas Governor. In 1859 Ross was appointed captain of a company of 120 Rangers by Governor Sam Houston to assist in protecting the state's frontier from attacks by the Comanche. In his most noteworthy engagement Ross attacked a large Comanche village on the Pease River, killing an important chief named Peta Nocona and rescuing the long lost Cynthia Ann Parker.When the Civil War broke out he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army, rising eventually to the rank of Brigadier General. He served the entire four years of the War, taking part in some 135 engagements. After the War he served as sheriff of McLennan County, then was elected to the legislature and in 1886 became the state's governor. After his term in office he became president of Texas A&M College and supervised an extensive building program and expansion of the student body before his death in 1898.
Ross's autograph is uncommon, and it is especially nice in this very displayable form. 16.5" x 13.5", and in excellent condition.
